I didnt see that anyone took a stab at a definition of UNIX  so HYG:

 UNIX is a very memory efficient computer operating system that was 
originally designed by the government. Its more command line driven than the 
happy point-and-click Windows interface that so many of us have come to know 
and love.

There are several versions of the UNIX operating system such as SUN SOLARIS, 
HP-UX, LINUX, etc.Many corporations run their business critical applications 
on SUN or HP UNIX platforms.
