    Eric, you need to know the function of the resistor. Until the plunger is full in the coil sleeve, it obeys a law similar to the laws of gravity. The attraction of the magnetic field decreases with the square of the distance from the attraction. Therefore it takes more power to attract the plunger when it is out of the sleeve. The latch coil is not a continuous duty type and requires heavy current to get it started on its way in. The coil in this state is getting full voltage. When the plunger reaches the end of its travel, a switch on the arm opens and the resistor is put in series with the source voltage, reducing it to a level that will not burn out the coil. This is a normally closed switch and if it does not bypass the resistor, the voltage to the coil will not be of a sufficient magnitude to operate the coil. If the resistor is bad, the coil will chatter and not hold in. Wes
