james, check the clamp arm switches. they will be explained in the J manual 
you have, basically the same manual in regards to the mech as the W. to 
locate the switches, lightly pull back the record clamp arm and look down 
toward the pivot. there will be a metal blade and two contacts. they are 
meant to reject the record if an empty slot is chosen or if a record does 
not seat on the hub. most people open the contacts wide for home use. justin

A friend has a W that has started rejecting the record as soon as it
clamped on the TT.  I think I repaired a G with this issue way back
when, but I cant remember which switch(es) were involved.

The closest manual I have is for the J.  Would the switch stack be the
same?
