Hi Rick, I have an AMI B and have encountered this
problem. In my experience it is normally one of 3
things. I am not too technically minded so please bear
with me and I will try and describe as best as
possible. First is the easy check. Check that either
of the two levers at the front of the mech have not
jammed. they may need a little oil to free them up.
These are the levers that hit the metal bar which is
raised to make the selection. This lever being jammed
will not allow the mech to go into reverse cycle. This
happened to me recently and that was the fix. if this
is not the case next take out the large junction box
at the side of the machine and clean the contacts in
there. if this still does not work then the problem
lies with the reversing switch. This is the switch
that sits vertical behind the tone arm post. You will
need to reverse the motor by hand to place the record
back in the rack. Then take the switch out. Heres the
fun bit. Carefully dissasemble the switch, take your
time, make notes as you go if you are not sure. once
it is apart you can clean the contacts. Be very
careful as there is a tiny spring inside and this has
a tendancy to fire across the room. Looking for it on
a carpet is no fun believe me. Chances are this switch
has never been apart and it will have dirty contacts.
Reassemble and connect up. You will need to reset the
lever with the adjusting nut as per the manual.
Turning the motor by hand, when the lever rides up on
the cam, if you pull it back slightly it should click
and when you turn it back and the lever falls back
into the recess, it should click again. This is a very
fiddly job but in my experience doing this has
normally cured the problem. Good luck. Always glad to
hear if anyone else has other suggestions.
Gary
