This may have been to keep the line cord from melting or falling apart 
and not for shielding purposes.  Not that it would have helped much 
judging from the condition of almost all AMI AC cords.

Pin 1 of a 6SJ7 (metal) is connected to the case, on a 6SJ7GT it is 
connected to an internal shield.  It shouldn't make any difference.

For what it's worth, metal 6SJ7s seem to be far more plentiful on the 
surplus market.
