I checked out the $250 SMC-1 last night and while it seems to work fine
with a few seemingly easy-to-fix problems, the cabinet is a mess. The glass
is pretty well scratched up, and there is additional damage near the right
speaker. A far cry from the first box I looked at which is absolutely beautiful.
The look is really the reason we're so hot for this box, so it would be
silly of us to buy the cheaper one knowing we can't easily correct the damage
to the cabinet if at all.

So the plan now is to grab the expensive-but-seemingly-pristine unit, though
I'm annoyed that I wasn't succesful in talking the seller down in price.
Apparently she once sold another SMC-1 for $2000(!), so either she's pulling
my leg or she found someone with money to burn who failed to recognize that
they were seriously overpaying. They're located in a somewhat ritzy area,
so I wouldn't be surprised if the latter wasn't the truth.

And no, I'm not paying anything close to $2000, but I'd be happier if I
could pay $100 or $200 less than I am. But then again, I'll be happiest
if the MCU doesn't need replacing anytime within the next 5 years or so.
 :)

So unless someone else agrees to the ultra-high in-store sticker price before
I claim the box, I should be finalizing this sale tomorrow -- after I see
it again in person and confirm that the issue with returning the record
is resolved, of course.

> Another thing is condition(cosmetics). Cosmetic condition isn't everything

but it's pretty important. Sometimes restoring a beat up one that works
is
more than one that doesn't work but looks like it hasn't had much use or
was
really taken care of. But I guess it depends on what's wrong internally. You

state that one is in excellent shape. compare that to the other one. Some
 damaged
cosmetic parts can never be made to look new again. You must either find
 a
good used one or new one if any are made at all. repairing damaged cabinets
is
a lot of work. Often more than just repainting. And chrome replating is

expensive. I'd love to have found some of my jukes as clean as the ones
Jackie
has.If the 1st one is as clean as you say it might be worth the $$$.
