Silver oxide is not a problem, it's nearly as conductive as pure silver.  It 
was a sticky layer of dried something-or-other (I'm leaning towards WD-40
or "contact cleaner").  That ammonia that Ron had made the brownish gunk
disappear, and the silver plating was bright white (where it was not tarnished).
Resistance went to zero all the way across the ten contacts.
