Jim,
  If the phono has been sitting for a while, or has some contamination on those resistors, smoking is pretty common. I suggest that you check that you have the correct lamp in there and that the correct combination solenoid and resistor are being used (see the schematic). If all is correct, you may wish to sub 10 watt resisters in place of the 5 watt (which is what Wurly specs call for). Ron Rich
