Back in 1984 I had a Pioneer turntable that had a laser in the headshell. It
could "see" the shiny spots between songs on an LP allowing the user to
chose which order the songs would be played in, or you could choose index
scan to hear the first few seconds of each song, etc. I'll admit this is not
the same as reading the music but it was 1984 so I tend to believe the
technology is not far fetched.
