[Jukebox-list] WAY OT ??

Ron, I know just about nothing about hydraulics, but I have heard of the
tram 'water hammer'. Also a blind container placed in the water line full of
air. This volume of air will compress easier than water and will cushion any
vibration caused by ant high speed valve action. I have seen loose washers
in faucets cause a terrible vibration that shake the walls of the house. If
you are alone when this first happens to you will send you to the laundry
room.
Tinfoil does not help those that are not paranoid. Wes

Subject: [Jukebox-list] WAY OT ??

Hi All,
This is way off topic--but I am going "crazier" (then I ever was?) over
this, and I hope some smart person out there can point me in the correct
direction.
Every night about 7:20 pm, for the last three nights, the wall behind my
40 gal natural gas water heater starts to oscillate at about 80-90 cycles.
It is a steady pitch. We can hear the hum through the whole house. It can be
heard in the water heater itself (if you put your ear up to it), though, it
sounds much louder in the wall. It can be felt, in the 4 inch waste pipe
that runs down from the upstairs bathroom about three feet from the water
heater, the water heater inlet, and outlet pipes, and, mostly, in the wall.
The first night, I tried turning the water on in several outlets in the
house--no difference, and I checked every outlet for water leaks. Then I
grabbed a small "2x4" and hit both the cold and hot pipes on top of the
heater--that stopped it. The second night I again took the "2x4" and gave
them a whack--did not stop, so I turned off the cold inlet to the water
heater--that stopped it. Last night, I just turned off the inlet valve--did
not stop the noise. I then went outside the house and turned the main valve
off (other valve was still off), and it stopped.
I know that this sounds "nuts"--but it really happens--
A couple of things that I am considering, I live about two miles from SF
Airport, and they have put up a couple of cell phone towers around here in
the last few months-- one about 100 yards from my house--
Anyone have any ideas?? (Or, is it time to use "tinfoil" on our heads?)
Thanks, Ron Rich
