Yes, competitors have a way of changing your plans! :-)  I
worked for AT&T Wireless when digital cell phones were just
hitting the market.  AT&T announced that free cell phones
were going away with analogue service.  If you wanted a
digital phone, you'd have to pay for it, and people would
pay for it because the service was cheaper, and they knew
they'd be saving in the long run; and other cell phone
companies would not give away digital phones because
they were too expensive to give away (and at the time,
AT&T was the only cell phone company in the US with a
digital, PCM, network).  I think that that marketing policy
lasted about two months.
