Transcription blanks were available in four sizes, 16",
12", 10" and 7". They consisted of an aluminum disk
(glass during WWII) spin-coated with lacquer. Most home
disk cutters, which had rather poor sound quality,
usually used 10" or 7" blanks. 16" blanks had a capacity
of 15 minutes at 33-1/3 RPM and were used for transcribing
radio programs. These machines came into use in the
mid 1930s and were eventually surplanted by tape recorders,
although some were used as late as the 1960s. These
type disks also replaced pure wax blanks as commercial
recording masters in the late 1930s. The professional-
quality blanks are still available for this application,
but they're expensive.
