I don't think they were ever "shiny" as in polished.
I cleaned up the lever assemblies on a G-120 last year.
I soaked then in kerosene for a couple days, shaking
them while sumberged several times to loosen the
gunk, and then sprayed them down really good with
WD-40 to wash out the kerosene, then blew the WD-40
out with a can of compressed air.  They came out nice
and clean, and the levers flopped around without
effort, but they had the look of clean metal, not
finished metal.
