I think you're going to have to face the fact, at some point,
that popular music in the early 50s by and large sucked.
It didn't all suck, but enough of it did that I'm not sure
you could find 50 records to put in the machine if you
limited yourself to that period.  The era between the death
of the big bands and the birth of rock-n-roll was by and
large one of the least inspiring in the history of
popular music, and probably only rivaled by the early 80s.
