The swirlies are caused by the record rack dividers, not the tonearm. If you
have a good stylus in your cartridge, proper tracking force (it needs to be
heavy enough so the tonearm can trip the switch at the end of the record
without skipping), and if there are no mechanical binds or snags, you should
not cause undue wear on your records, at least from the tonearm side of things.
I don't think the grooves on 45's are nearly as delicate as LP's, and they
certainly weren't designed with high-end Hi-fi systems in mind. The rack
swirls are another matter. I doubt they cause much audible noise, but they
make the record unattractive to prospective buyers if you ever want to sell.
