Tony should answer this (as he designed it!, IIRC) but....I think you just
remove the insertable program card and you're on freeplay.

The red box replaces both the grey AND the black box. And there are no
obsolete specialty chips in it - just a bunch of three pins.
Makes me think the black&grey setup could have been done much simpler, but
three digit system is of course more demanding than two digit.
