Ron, the field coil does not enter into this question. If it is in the
area of 5 K, it is only a load on the B+. An unloaded tube type amplifier
can possibly damage the output transformer on high volume settings. The high
AC voltage that is developed in this case can jump the insulation in the
transformer to other windings and cause partial shorts.
A transistor amplifier is exactly just the opposite. The less load on
the output, the less damage can occur. In other words, a shorted speaker
line on a tube type amplifier will cause no damage. The opposite is true an
a solid state amplifier. Wes
Hi All,
Someone asked me a question about speaker loads--and I would like some
opinions as to the correct answer--
On a tube type amp, with a field coil--what is the danger of having no, or
a very small load (not using the VC portion of the field coil speaker at
all)?
On a tube type-PM speaker set-up--same question??
A "transistor type Amp"--same question??
TIA, Ron Rich
