Ron, almost all of the speakers of this vintage were an early type pf
'magnetic'. They had a moving vane in a magnetic field and a high impedance
coil around the vane. Somewhat similar to the early magnetic reproducers
used in tone arms. The square box may be a transformer, but I cannot imagine
why. Most of these speakers were connected directly to the plate of a triode
output tube. The speakers of this type were famous for their lack of low
frequencies, sounded like Rudy Valle. Wes
