I got lucky last week. I had been to the Electronics Swap Meet in Cupertino
the week before with my business partner (we had a booth), and an elderly
fellow walked up to me and asked if we would like to buy about 1200 tubes he
had in his garage. Our truck says "We buy excess electronic inventory" on the
side, so I guess he saw that. Anyway, I went to see the guy the following week
and made a deal for his tubes. There were more like 1700, 99% of them "new"
in boxes (not loose, dusty used tubes rattling around in a big box, like I
get sometimes). When I got them back, I carefully combed through the lot
and came
up with eight RCA 6973's and two 7199's. There were also a couple dozen
12AX7's,
12AU7's, a few 6V6's and some other "audio" tubes. No 6L6's or KT88's, though.
This is about the only way we get tubes any more, when a Ham Radio operator
or electronics technician either downsizes his posessions prior to moving,
or dies
and his widow is cleaning out the garage/workshop. I get about a half-dozen of
these calls a year (not all have tubes, though...) This time, as I said, I got
lucky...the 6973's and 7199's went into my personal jukebox stock, I'm still
sorting through the others!
