Hi Everyone, I was wondering if anyone could shed some
light on something that I have been living with for
many years and never got around to trying to fix it.
basically the record arm on my AMI B has always had a
tendancy to put the 78 down on the turntable too fast
for my liking, thus increasing the likelyhood of
cracking the record, (although none so far). I looked
at a friends and his action seems to be much
slower/gentler. We put a resistor in to slow the motor
down which helped a bit and got it to an acceptable
level (when I first bought the machine, the records
really slammed down on the turntable). I know that
some will say that this may reduce the life of the
motor, but after 10 years or so it hasnt affected it
at all. I was thinking that maybe the problem is that
the record arm shaft has become worn over the years.
It does seem a little bit sloppy in its housing, but
dont have anything to compare it against. I have
replaced the motor, but this has made no difference. I
just wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem
and if so how did they go about fixing it.
thanks
Gary Young
PS I dont want to see another 78 for a long
time...Just helped move 16,000 plus from an estate.
2nd floor apartment..Ouch my back hurts.
