I would guess that your friend's is running too slow.
It would be very difficult to encounter a condition
in which the motor would run faster than designed.
Remember, the lowering of the transfer arm does not
place the record on the turntable,  The *opening* of
the transfer arm does that.  Mine cycles rather 
briskly itself, but I've never had any trouble with
it breaking records.  Certainly the original engineers
would have modified the record changer, in the 20-some
years between the time it was first developed and
the model B was introduced, if there was a breakage
issue.  How long does yours take to go from the time
the carriage stops until the tonearm touches down?
