[Jukebox-list] RE: Need help with Rowe-AMI TI-1 fuse replacement

Here's my two cents worth. When AC solenoids are designed, the problem of residual magnetism is more troublesome that on DC coils. A DC coil can have a thick magnetic insulator between the pole and the armature. When this is attempted on an AC coil, it will buzz terribly loud and not seat properly. In an attempt in correcting this problem, a 'shading' is added in the magnetic field. When power is disconnected of zero, magnetism is stored in the assembly. The shading ring, through induction places a small magnetic charge of opposite polarity in the material. With time and wear, this ring is distorted and cannot do its job efficiently. As Ron says, this is the nature of the beast. In some cases a resistor may be added in the circuit to maintain a small de-magnetizing voltage on the coil. This is kind of tricky. Too higher resistance will do no good and too lower resistance will try to hold the coil in.
This is particularly objectionable in Seeburg latch solenoids. It is best to keep this coil energized to a minimum length of time. Just give the player time to push two buttons. A loud buzzing is beneficial in this case because anyone will want to stop the buzzing as soon as possible. Think latch coil timers. Wes

Bob,
I don't recall what type latch sol is used in that phono, but if it's an AC type, that's the nature of the beast, when old. Ron Rich

Thanks Rich and Kyle for your advice and info regarding my fuse dilema.
Interestingly, being in Chicago you would think there would be a plethora of electronics shops around town. All of the ones I called in my area hardly know what a 'fuse' is... but they sure know what an iPod and BoomBox is! They all speak broken english as well. Hence my initial trip to Radio Shack out of desperation. Any Chicago folks on the list know of or recommend a good electronics supply shop?
I'm going to hunt down a proper 2.8/10 MDL Slo-Blo as well as a couple of 2.5 ones as per Rich's suggestion.
If they hold then great. If not...... (no, I will not stuff a wad of aluminum foil in the hole!)
One more question for you guys: The latch solenoid has been intermittently buzzing loudly. It comes and goes. Would you know if THAT might be what is causing a circuit overload? When the fuse is blown I can no longer make selections (the buttons won't stay down). I understand that the latch solenoid has something to do with this but I'm not 100% sure. Anyway, the latch is the loudest indication of an issue so that's why I bring it up.
Thanks again!
Bob
BTW: I subscribe to the List's Digest.. that's why I did not reply to each of your postings separately.
Has anyone else (getting the Digest) noted that the email headers are missing on most of the posts? I sent an email to Jay H. about this, incidentally.
