Does anyone know if Rock-ola had a similar system?
My 443 just drops the cart on the turntable edge if you select an empty
slot, thankfully the stylus hangs in air and escapes damage.

Ian, the wire you disconnected is the 'empty record' sensor. If no
record is picked up by the gripper bow, the tone arm lies down a bit
further and the screw on the tone arm hits the plate and the cam motor
keeps running. Wes
