The United States uses the Queen Anne wine gallon, defined
in 1706 as the volume of eight "merchant pounds" of wine.
In 1824, Britain adopted the larger ale gallon as its
official unit of volume, which was standardized as the
volume of ten pounds of distilled water. Since the US
and Britain were already spiltsville at that time, the
US retained the older unit of measure.
