I use regular thermostat wire on my wallboxes.  Home Depot carries it.  

Where would we be without these mega-stores ;-)

Just remember, if you want to put terminals on the wire ends, you shouldn't crimp solid wire - you should solder the terminals on.

As for maintenance, the manual has suggestions.  Cleaning and lubrication is basically it.  And like any other electro-mechanical beast, it is best to use it regularly!
