Both my dad and my uncle (his brother) each have a P-12. My dad's is fully
restored, but has needed a little tweaking recently. We're giving my uncle
(who is in Montana) guidance and encouragement on the restoration of his.

The grill is wood that is shaped by a complex job of router-ing. Take a look
at Ken in Texas's site for pics:

The amp is pretty basic, if you have moderate electronic skills you could
probably work on it yourself. But, go with your comfort level. Remember
that there is pretty high voltage (~300 volts) going to the field coil of
the speaker! The Simplex mechanism is really fun to watch in operation.
Beautiful wood veneer was used on those glorious woodies! Also, if those
two screw-base sockets on the side of the cabinet are empty, one of them
takes a Fusestat, and one takes a light bulb!
