The reason everyone told you that was that you mis-described the symptom--you did not say that the gears stopped turning, you said that something like  the mech was jerking. It's impossable to diagnose the problem when the facts are not at hand.

Everyone on the newsgoup was trying to tell me that the clutch on my Seeburg 
SS-160 was bad. An old pro I know was in town a couple of weeks ago and he 
took a look at it. Turned out to be a missing screw in the motor coupling.
