Aren't they almost always rusted? I cleaned the rust off using a dremel
too with the flexible shaft. I used two different brass brush bits.
One was disk shaped and the other was conical. If you do go this route,
buy extra bits. You *must* wear safety glass since the brush wheels
will shed and the bristles will fly off at you and anything else nearby.
Also, I recommend a dust mask since it will kick up rust dust and
third hand smoke. If you want to avoid painting, stick with the brass
brush wheels. There are some abrasive wheels for dremel, but they will
not shine as well as the brass wheels and may strip the chrome. I still
need to go after a couple of tough spots with a jeweler's screw driver
to clean some rust out of some of the grooves. I am aware that this
will not prevent future rust, but I am hopeful that in its current
environment that is a low risk.

This may work for you, depending on how bad the rust is on yours. When
I get a chance I will try to get some before and after pictures up so
that you can use that for comparison.
