I'm sure it's still tubes, as my uncle's 2700 is a tube amp.  What I
don't know (and am asking the more knowledgable on this group) is if
it is still the Cobra cartridge system, and what was the last year
they used that?

Still a visible mechanism, lots of colored lights and chrome.  What a steal!
