Allen,
  I doubt that the needles are the problem--you might check the tip size--if "1 mil" they are not designed for stereo records--but I think that the newer ones are the reduced size for stereo records. Even if they are mono needles, it should not affect tracking--just dig up your records.
  The other think that I forgot to mention is a stiff tone arm wire--this will cause all sorts of strange tracking problems.
