Hi John,
The service switch operation is correct. It should be set to ON when in
operation.
Your only problem is jamming against the pins.
Does it do this for all pins, both A and B side selections ?
If so, your problem is likely to be the stopping switch adjustment (probably
best to see the manual, but it's the switch operated when the sensor hits
the pin).
This is adjustable by a screw. Look around the pin sensor area, rotating the
magazine by hand, and you will see it.
Another likely candidate is the back stop pawl adjustments.

A bit more detail on the problem. When you select a record the pin comes up
and the turntable motor operates if the service switch is on or off. To make
it scan the service switch has to be on if it's off it doesn't scan. If you
let it scan with the service switch on it then jams against the pin. Any
help appreciated. Thanks. John
