As with any cartridge, I suppose that they could, anything can--but unless they have been abused, dropped, or  hit with voltage, the only thing I can think of is that the magnet could loose magnetism. One thing you should check, is, make sure the area that the needle slides into is free of "stuff". Replacing the "needle" re-places all moving parts. Other than physically broken needle supports, I have never seen a "bad" "Red head" stereo Seeburg cartridge. I have seen one, brand new "wedge type" which was open--came directly from Pickering, to me, that way.   Ron Rich
