There is a gear or pulley at the front of the mech for the pop meter (at 
least on the 1448). You will have to remove two square head bolts holding 
this to the shaft. Also, the allen screws in the back are pointed on the 
inside end and fit into two grooves on the very end of the shaft - they are 
longer than you think - and if you don't loosen them enough, they will dig 
into the shaft as you remove it (unless you remove the shaft out the front). 
Sometimes I do have to give the shaft a love tap.
