Belt from old camera bag or binocular bag is perfect size also. That's what im gonna use on the G i'm restoring now.  If you pierce a small hole for the top side with an awl or ice pick, it's not gonna hold as good as a snap. Care to share that type and number of yellow paint? 

 What do you use on your aluminum? Try Met-All. It is used for polishing commercial airplanes. Beats Mothers, Never Dull etc. Used in conjunction with fine steel wool it even removes small imperfections much the same as novus does for plastic.
