Ha! That's great. Back in college I had a BMW 1800/02-ti (very
much like the later 2002). Thanks to a friend who opened a door
on a busy street, I had to put on a junkyard door. For some
reason I don't remember, the lock in the old door was incompatible.
I went to the local BMW dealer and the *owner* came out and
looked at my car (which at the time was over 10 years old) and
said "Ah! You have the European model! Well, you can pay me
$200 to import the right lock and set it to match your key, or
you can pull the lock out of this door, put your key in it, and
grind down whatever tumblers are sticking up." Guess which one
I did? :-) And imagine a BMW dealer telling a kid something
like that *today*?!?
