[Jukebox-list] 1015 needles

Here's my input:
The Rhino repro 78's were cut at 2 mil (as far as I've read, and can
tell from visual inspection). It's a compromise between the standard
78rpm 3 mil, and the microgroove 1 mil. It's possible other repro 78's
were cut with a smaller groove size, but it would not have been the best
way to press them.
I've used the Astatic 51-2 cartridge with ok results (the "-2" is the
mil size of the stylus). The problem I found with the 2 mil stylus is
that it tended to drift inside the 3 mil original 78's (especially on
worn records). I ordered a 3 mil stylus for this cartridge from Victory
Glass, and found there was a tremendous improvement in sound: no more
drifting, much less distortion, and more volume. Seemed to generally
track better too. It's well worth the minor cost. The 2 mil size would
be fine for repro 78's.
But if you HAD to intermix new and old records I guess 2mil would be the
best compromise, as a 3mil is too wide for the repros and would not
track properly.
Personally, I believe the 51 cartridge is ok for older records, but the
tracking weight needed (10+ grams) would be a little hard on the vinyl
repro 78's (resulting in much shorter life compared to a shellac disc).
Now, if you really wanted to go all out, KAB sells Stanton magnetic
cartridges with various size 78 styli. You could use one of these, but
you'd need a pre-amp to increase the voltage enough for the original
Wurlitzer amp. Here's there site:

Victory Glass also sells their upgrade kit complete with a magnetic
cartridge and pre-amp.
Hope I haven't thoroughly confused you!
Mike

Do you know whether your "repro" 78s have 3 mil grooves or
1 mil? Some were cut with 1 mil cutting heads and so can't be played
(well) intermixed with 78s with standard 3 mil grooves.
