Here is another site showing a better picture of the tubes and a small
explanation of the thyratron. From what I read this tube has two states, so
in the ring counter circuit it acts like a flip flop chip.... and there were
several varieties of those: D, J-K and various gated FFs.
Googling "thyratron" will give you all manner of definitions for what it is
and how it works.
