[Jukebox-list] Tormat selection

Since we're on the subject of 2050 tubes, I had a question to ask the
group.
I've heard that the regular tube can have a fairly short life. There's
supposed to be a solid state replacement made by a Daniel Zavaro
(according to Dr Know-It-All books) that is guaranteed for 5 years. The
suggestion is that this is much better than the original tube.
Do any of you know anything about this 2050 replacement? Has anyone used
these, and were they any good? Any comments or suggestions?
Thanks
Mike

Ron, the 2050 has a filament and has a warm up time. Another
thyratron is a 0A4G is a cold cathode type and has no filament.
Something like the 0A2 regulator tubes. The 2D21 types as used in the
TSR-1 in the V-200 are a miniature version of 2050. And they were used
in the write in, read out and stepper circuits. This was the only model
that used these. The TSR-3 was more simple. There was a retrofit
sullplied for the replacement of the TRS-1 in the V-200. Many owners
opted not to take advantage of this offer and there is a lot of TSR-1
still out there.
The 2050 is used in the trip circuit and it is possible that if the
juke is turned on and a selection is made close to the park position
before the tube warms up the mechanism may miss the selection on the
first pass, but should get it on the second pass. Wes

Steve,
Answer to your question is both--however, the "thyratron" ( aka
"2050") is in neither the write in, nor read out, circuits. It resides
in the "trip"
(both on, and off the record) circuit. Another 2050 needs to be
installed for use with the wallbox pulses, if stepper operation is
desired.
The way I think of the tube's operation, is that it's just a simple
(electrical) relay, or, an opto isolator. It is "pulsed", which causes
it to "fire and "energize" an isolated DC coil (of some type--depending
on the app.).

As a seeburg-inexperienced bystander, I am curious if the tube(s) that
need warming up are in the write in circuit, the read-out circuit, or
both?
I belive I heard there's a tube in the read-out circuit, but I recall it
being called a "thyratron" (or something like that), and I may be
getting my technologies confused... but I recently read an interesting
article that talks about a calculator that used "cold-cathode" tubes,
and that article also revers to thyratron tubes.
This is the article:
http://www.oldcalculatormuseum.com/anitaC-VIII.html
I could be confusing many things: Is thyratron really the word used for
the tube in the seeburg read-out circuitry? The calculator article
doesn't say that all thyratrons are cold-cathode, but makes me wonder if
they are.
Hope you guys don't mind me trying to satisfy my curiosity here!
