Ok, good point. But what if we are putting the oil on a mech that's been fully cleaned and degreased? What harm would there be using a detergent based oil? If anything, one would think it'd probably keep the parts cleaner (or do the detergents gum up after a while?) 

I'm not sure, and that's why I'm asking for an opinion from the group.

Use 3 in 1 "electric motor" oil NOT houshold oil. 
You can also use straight 20w "non-detergent" oil.

Never use wd-40.
