Jeremy,
What's wrong with a detergent based oil? I thought it would be good at
desolving gum and varnish from old dried up oil?
Michael,
Detergent oils have additives that dissolve the soot that forms during
combustion and keeps the soot in suspension. This soot is too small for the
normal oil filter to capture and it is why your motor oil eventually turns
dark. It has nothing to do with dissolving gum or varnish, you would need a
solvent of some type for that and that's one of the reasons WD40 is not
recommended. Gum is formed by the dirt the oil filter doesn't capture and
varnish would form during periods of excessive heat with inadequate
lubrication.
Don't know the science behind it, but the additives must be bad mojo because
a non-detergent oil is recommended for many applications that don't involve
combustion.
