Is the thump substantially louder on the "B" side of the record (pickup
to the right side of the record when viewed from the front)? If so,
then the metal shield may be of value. This thump is caused by the
magnetic field from the trip coil being picked up by the coils in the
cartridge and amplified.
On the left side of the record, the cartridge is farther from the coil
and the magnetic field weaker.
