Possible but in my opinion unlikely.  By the time the mechanism has gone 
from play to transfer and the stylus is lifted from the record, the mute 
circuit should have long since been activated.  You can test this by 
pushing the arm away from the record surface during play with an 
insulated tool.

I'd look for an electrical spike of some kind.

Try removing the cartridge and replacing it with an 1800-ohm resistor 
with short leads that doesn't contact the metal tonearm.  Just bend the 
wires and push them into the socket.  Make a selection and push the 
tonearm in to where it trips.  If it pops, you can rule out shielding, 
magnetic pickup, and mechanical issues.

Does the volume setting affect the loudness of the thump?
