I think it depends on the metal content of the alloy. Sometimes it works,
sometimes not,
The alloy can vary quite a bit. It seems like they used what they could get.
Especially during WW2 when there were shortages and some materials were
restricted.
Replaters (at least here) think that jukebox castings are more unpredictable
then the automobile castings they are used to.
The Packards seem to have used good pot metal, from my experience. Most
common problem with this mechanism is lack of lubrication of the shafts the
carriage runs on. The slip clutch will just slip and the magazine is stuck
between two selections, and then lift arm is jammed. More often then not the
record takeout cam is bent because of this.
Packard made a good number of hideaways, meaning mech parts aren't that hard
