I've noticed that if you hold the needle up to a bright light, the
sapphire is transparent, where as the diamond is not.

This is an easy one.

The diamond LP one is ALWAYS the one where the lever is pointing to the
left, or towards the spindle, the sapphire (LP or 78) is the one being
used when the lever is pointing right, or away from the spindle.

Translated to Wurlitzer:  Lever pointing down, diamond, lever pointing
up, sapphire.
