Hi all. I was a member here before, I have a Continental 1 and a JAN Diplomat.
Helping a freind out with an AMI Model C. It's been converted to 45s, but has lots of problems I am trying to sort out for him.
Last night I repaired the end of the pickup wire where it plugs into the amp, the wires were ripped right out of the connector. He has no cartridge for it so I am advising him to get one from Durfee, the replacement for the Astatic called the P-51-1 for 45 conversions. One question right away is if I have him buy a spare needle, would diamond or sapphire stylus be best?
The amp does come on (tubes glow) but something unusual. At first the amp wasn't turning on, so I plugged the amp cord directly to a wall socket and it came on, so I figued has a junction box problem. When I looked at the junction box I found a switch (DC on/off), which is hard to see because it's at the front side of the box (faces away from you when in back of the jukebox). The weird thing is if I shut DC off, the amp does power up when plugged into the junction box, but you can't select a record with it off. If you turn DC ON, then you can select a record, and when the record is dropped on the turntable the AMP then comes on! The turntable isn't working right now but I seem to have that narrowed down to a bad cord from the turntable. The turntable of course plugs into the amp, so I am confused on if this is correct, that the amp stays off until a record is put on the turntable? Doesn't make sense as we all know the amps aren't ready to put out sound for a bit after powering them up.
Thanks for any advice
