OK, since I was going strictly by memory, and since past
experience has proven that practice unsound :-) I did
a little more reasearch on this. Like I said my parents
also had one of these, which had been converted to use
paper bags. They were married in 1956, so the
remanufactured ones were certainly still available that
late. The label on mine (formerly my grandparents'),
fixing the minimum price at $69.75 (jeez lousie - these
machines have *always* been expensive!) was issued by
the Office of Price Administration. The Office of Price
Administration was abolished in 1947. It issued its first
price ceiling regulations in 1942 (for the war, not the
depression, although FDR tried that in the 30s as well), so
my grandparents' machine certainly was purchased during
that 5-year interval. That model, called the "Model-XXX"
was introduced in 1937. I found a really good web site
here: http://www.137.com/lux/ and according to
that, mine looks like the model of 1939, but it has the
two-door front end introduced in 1949, so this piece must
have been replaced at some point (my parents' also had
that front end). Beginning in 1952, the model-XXX was
painted a blue color to match the finish of the new model
LX. The model my parents bought to replace the worthless
Sears Kenmore they bought to replace their XXX was a model
L, introduced in 1962. They bought theirs remanufactured
in the late 70s, and it had been modified to power the
rotating-brush head used in the then-current models. Used
and hotrodded Electroluxes seem to have been as vital a market
as used cars! (The two in my attic looke like the model XII,
and were made in Sweden.)
Now, isn't that more than anyone would want to know about
vacuum cleaners? :-)
