Hi All,
The exporting of jukes has been going on for years. Back in the late '60's, I worked for a Seeburg Dist. in San Francisco. We had one customer from "down under" who would purchase ANY Seeburg (used--cheap) that we could supply to him. He proceeded to use our shop to "salvage" the mech, keyboard, "Control Center" and sometimes the amp. He then would make me cry as he would "make it into parts", by cutting wires, ripping out motors, and just generally making the stuff look "bad". His distruction was random, and was an effort to defeat the "import tax" (of 400%, I think) for a jukebox. He listed the stuff as "parts" on customs forms. He came into town about twice a year. He would then build a "new" jukebox over there, using a new cabinet and all the guts from here.
We also had another customer from an Asian country that would buy ten or so, brand new jukes, and have me help him remove the "newness". We sprayed paint and "dirt" (including rat droppings-which we saved just for him!), all over them. We added wires (that were cut), and removed new flour lamps, and replace them with ones that were burned out (black ends) so that it appeared the machines were in-operable. Once again, this was an effort to fool his country's customs inspector.
