You know, no sooner did I send this than I got
to thinking that many houses in Great Britain
were wired with replacable-element fuses, which
consisted of an insulator around which one
wound the fuse element and then re-inserted
it in the fuse box. Those may have been more
common than the Edison base fuses in Britain.
Of course, Britian had so many weird power
"standards" that many appliances weren't shipped
with plugs on their power cords until relatively
recently.
