David, most all mechanisms that use DC motors must have a circuit for dynamic braking to offset inertial forces of the armature's rotation. If the circuit is not working, this would cause the motor to coast a small bit before stopping and this lose its index position. Wes

So, are you saying that the record rack stops *before* the
arm contacts the pin, or that the arm contacts the pin, the
record rack stops, then it moves a little more?

The same pulse that activates the mute relay also
cancells the pin. This draws me back to the switches
activated by the rotating transfer arm cam. The
reject switch doesn't trip a mechanism like on some
machines - it just supplies power to the transfer
motor. As soon as it starts to move, one of those
switches on the can closes, which provides it with
the rest of the power needed to return the record
to the rack. The fact that the motor doesn't start
moving suggests that it still hsan't completed the
cycle to the turntable, so the pin doesn't get
cancelled, the mute switch isn't activated, and the
phase of the motor isn't yet configured to run
"backwards" back into the rack. I'd bet that the
transfer is stopping just short of the connection
being made (again, at one of the transfer arm switches)
so these have gotten out of adjustment. I'm hobbled
here by the fact that I don't have a manual for this
machine with me. Maybe someone else can identify the
specific switch contacts are involved here.
