[Jukebox-list] Re: Rockola 1438 Slug Ejector Problem

I recently purchased a Seeburg SMC-1 (still waiting to pick 'er up), and
mostly because of the high price I paid, I absolutely insisted that the coin
mech worked before I completed the purchase. I understand well that this
is one of the simplest parts of the jukebox, but as Jay said, it is really
part of the fun. And aside from that, I'm not paying a high price unless
*everything* I'm educated enough to test is working.

Currently, my only working juke is a Rowe TI-2 which I do not have the key
for the cashbox for nor have I drilled out the lock yet. So in that case,
I'm manually issuing credits. But after a while of doing this I realized
that I was indeed missing out on some of the fun. My wife still yells at me
when she sees me put a quarter in the machine. "Why do you keep doing that?
I need those quarters for the bus. How and when are we going to get
those out?!?!"

In fact, the SMC-1 I'll be taking delivery on came from a collector's game
room and never had a bill acceptor installed. Call me crazy, but I was
slightly disappointed in that. Why? Because I remember as a kid fighting
tooth and nail at some jukeboxes trying to get them to accept my bills. The
memory came back to me that many times I had to ask a complete stranger to
exchange my wrinkled bill for one that was more crisp, or even worse -- my
father, who was none too pleased that he had to give me one in the first
place!   So playing a song on the juke wasn't just making your selection;
sometimes you had to struggle to hear a few songs. Put the bill in, watch
it spit it out. Put the bill in, watch it spit it out. Wow, maybe on the
third try it would work! :)

In any case, I'll certainly be requiring that coins be inserted into my
jukes when possible. Do I have something against the idea of using free
play? No, that's one's personal preference. But for me, the jukes are all
about the nostalgia. And hearing that quarter travel throughout the machine
and see the number of credits increase as a result was all a part of my
memory.
